Sheds Carports Garages Barns
Utility Building Definitions
There is a lot of variation in terms used for utility buildings of various types. Here are a few definitions to help cut through the fog:
Sheds
A shed, in the strictest sense of the word, is a building with no sides, a flat roof, and with that flat roof lower on one side than the other to allow water to "shed" off the top. The term shed has become synonymous with any outbuilding used for storage or other purposes, most often in combination with storage as in storage shed.
Storage Buildings Storage Sheds
A storage building, or storage shed can be one of many types of buildings, from portable utility buildings to large, non portable garages and shops. The materials from which they can be made range from simple plywood siding to concrete, brick and mortar, and various metals.
Wood Storage Sheds
Wood storage sheds are commonly sheds built from wood, unless someone is talking about a place to store their firewood, in which case, a wood shed could be made of wood, metal, or any other suitable material. In most instances, a wood storage shed would be a building built from wood. Wood is a very common building material, and is relatively easy to work with, and for these reasons, it is a popular choice among do-it-yourselfers for building an outbuilding.
Metal Storage Buildings Metal Storage Sheds
Metal storage buildings. A metal storage building is of course a building built with some type of metal. Many storage sheds are built with wooden frames and metal siding. Some storage building kits are built with light metal frames, and metal sides. Most carports and garages are constructed with metal frameworks and metal siding as well. The metals most often used are steel and aluminum.
Steel Buildings
Steel Buildings, of course, are metal buildings. Most steel buildings make use of galvanized steel sheeting which is then primed and painted for corrosion prevention and appearance. Modern steel siding is extremely durable, and many manufacturers guarantee it to last 20 years or more without rust through. The durability, availability, good looks, and practicality of steel siding make it a great choice for any type of building project. Almost any utility building can be made of steel.
Outdoor Storage Buildings Outdoor Storage Sheds
Outdoor storage buildings are storage buildings used outdoors, I suppose, as opposed to indoor storage like a closet or the laundry room. In most cases this phrase is used to denote the type of storage building or storage shed used in the back yard of many rural and suburban homes.
Portable Buildings
Portable buildings are buildings that can be moved. Most are manufactured at one site, and trucked to another site. They can be manufactured from any of the materials commonly used for utility buildings, and are used for storage, offices, field offices, home recreation, workshops, and many other purposes.
Carports
Carports are made from a variety of materials. The most common type being steel frame structures with steel sheeting on top. The older style of wood or brick carport was a sort of "lean to", attached to the side of a home, and oriented to shed water away from the home. Their purpose is to protect cars and trucks from rough weather conditions.
Garages
Garages of the type commonly found connected to living quarters are changing into utility rooms, and are used less often to house vehicles, and more often for storage, or extra rooms such as game rooms, or spare bedrooms. Many people choose to build a garage, separate from the home for the purpose of housing their automobiles. Most of these structures are steel buildings.
Pole Barns
Pole barns are post frame structures. Posts are set in the ground, and a roof attached. Today these range from the rudimentary single flat roof shed to complex, highly adaptable buildings, many are suitable for living space. They are usually made from treated wood poles, sheathed at the base with a material to prevent rot, framed with wood, and covered with high quality steel sheets.
